のろし West Coast IPA

昨年好評だったWest Coast IPAを再び製造しました。Citra、Mosaic、Amarillo、Motueka、CTZを使用し、鮮やかな柑橘、松脂、ダンクな香りと力強い苦味を表現。Alc.7.0％の飲み応えを持ちながら、ドライでクリアな飲み心地を追求した、クラシカルとモダンの間にあるWest Coast IPAです。

美しいほどに透き通った淡いゴールドの液色。パイントグラスに注がれた瞬間、その透明感に吸い込まれるような美しさです。

グラスからはレモンピールやグレープフルーツの鮮やかな柑橘香に、松脂やほのかなダンクさが重なります。口に含むとシトラスやトロピカルフルーツの華やかさが広がり、続いて松のような清涼感と力強い苦味へ。Alc.7.0％の厚みを持ちながらもフィニッシュはドライ。グレープフルーツの白皮を思わせる苦味が長く続く、クラシカルな力強さと現代的なクリーンさを併せ持つIPAです。

昨年のAlc.8.0％という設計に対し、「それはDouble IPAではないか」と多くの方から言われたことが印象に残っています。

Double IPA、Imperial IPAという概念が無かった時代を超え、それらの考え方は広く浸透しています。しかし自分の中では、West Coast IPAをアルコール8％のイメージがありました。

その感覚と世間との間にギャップがあったことも事実です。また、自分がパイントで２杯でかなり酔ったのも記憶して。３パイントは今回呑みたいということことから度数を下げることに決めました。

今回の7.0％は単に度数を下げることが目的ではありません。力強いホップの個性と苦味を維持しながら、より軽快でクリアな飲み心地を目指しました。

初めてGreen FlashのWest Coast IPAを飲んだ時の衝撃は今でも忘れられません。鮮明なホップの香りと突き抜けるような苦味。自分のビール人生における青春ともいえる体験で、今も醸造の原点の一つです。Chuck Silvaさん、ありがとうございます。

今回は5種類のホップで柑橘、松、ダンク、トロピカルの個性を構成。昔ながらの荒々しい魅力を残しながら、苦味の質はよりクリーンに。時間をかけた清澄化によって透明感を高め、最後までドライに飲み進められる仕上がりを意識しました。

クラシカルとモダンの間にある、自分たちなりのWest Coast IPAです。

CO₂は2.5～2.6Volに設定しています。

Noroshi West Coast IPA

■ Brief Description

We’ve brewed our West Coast IPA again, following its popularity last year. Using Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo, Motueka, and CTZ hops, this beer features vibrant citrus and pine aromas, a rich, earthy character, and a robust bitterness. With an alcohol content of 7.0%, it offers a satisfying body while delivering a dry, crisp finish—a West Coast IPA that bridges the gap between classic and modern styles.

A beautifully clear, pale gold color. The moment it’s poured into a pint glass, its transparency draws you in with its stunning beauty.

The glass releases vibrant citrus aromas of lemon peel and grapefruit, layered with pine resin and a subtle earthiness. On the palate, the vibrant notes of citrus and tropical fruits spread across the tongue, followed by a pine-like freshness and robust bitterness. Despite the body typical of 7.0% ABV, the finish is dry. With a long-lasting bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit pith, this IPA combines classic strength with modern cleanliness.

This West Coast IPA, released last year, was enjoyed by many. We’ve been able to brew it again this year.

I vividly recall how, when we released it last year with an alcohol content of 8.0%, many people asked, “Isn’t that a Double IPA?”

We’ve moved beyond an era when concepts like “Double IPA” and “Imperial IPA” didn’t exist, and those ideas are now widely accepted. However, in my mind, I’ve always associated West Coast IPA with an 8.0% ABV.

It’s true that there was a gap between my perception and the general public’s. I also remember getting quite tipsy after just two pints. Since I wanted to be able to enjoy three pints this time, I decided to lower the alcohol content.

The 7.0% ABV in this batch wasn’t just about lowering the alcohol content. I aimed for a lighter, cleaner drinking experience while maintaining the bold hop character and bitterness.

I still can’t forget the impact I felt the first time I drank Green Flash’s West Coast IPA—the vivid hop aroma and piercing bitterness. It was a defining experience in my beer-drinking youth and remains one of the cornerstones of my brewing philosophy to this day.

【Tasting Comment】
グラスからは、レモンピールやグレープフルーツを思わせる明るい柑橘の香りが立ち上がり、
松脂のようなシャープでクリーンなアロマ、そしてほのかにダンクなニュアンスが重なります。

口に含むと、鮮烈なシトラスとトロピカルのアロマが広がり、
続いて松の樹皮のような清涼感としっかりとした苦味が輪郭を形づくります。
8％のアルコールがもたらす重厚感がボディを支えながらも、仕上がりはあくまでドライ。

余韻にはグレープフルーツの白皮のような苦味と松脂の清らかさが長く伸び、
飲みごたえとキレの良さが同居する、のろし醸造らしいWest Coast IPAです。

【Brewer’s Comment】

今回の West Coast IPA では、クリアで透き通った印象と、
スタイルの特徴でもあるしっかりとした苦味の両立を意識しています。

—初めて Green Flash の West Coast IPA を飲んだ時のあの衝撃。
“こんなにもクリアで、こんなにも香りが鮮明なIPAがあるのか” と胸が震えた、
まさに自分のビール人生の青春と言える瞬間でした。
その体験は、現在の自分が West Coast IPA をつくる上での方向性に強く影響しています。

また、昔の West Coast IPA に見られた粗さのある苦味ではなく、
よりクリーンで後味が整った現代的な苦味を目指しました。

透明感を高めるため、タンク内で時間をかけて清澄化を行っています。
冷えた状態ではタンパク質由来のチルヘイズが出る場合がありますが、
温度が上がるにつれて透明度は戻り、ホップアロマもより鮮明に感じられます。

ホップは Amarillo・Citra・Mosaic・Motueka・CTZ を組み合わせ、
柑橘・松・ダンク・トロピカルのキャラクターがバランス良く表れるように設計しました。
West Coast IPA らしいしっかりとした苦味を保ちつつ、
8％を重く感じさせないドライさとクリアな後味を意識した仕上がりです。

Bright citrus aromas reminiscent of lemon peel and grapefruit rise from the glass,

followed by a refreshing pine bark-like sensation and a firm bitterness that shapes the profile.
The 8% alcohol provides a substantial weight supporting the body, yet the finish remains distinctly dry.

The finish lingers with grapefruit pith-like bitterness and the purity of pine resin,
a West Coast IPA that embodies both drinking satisfaction and crispness—truly characteristic of Noroshi Brewing.

For this West Coast IPA, we focused on achieving both a clear, transparent impression
and the robust bitterness that defines the style.

—That shock when I first tasted Green Flash's West Coast IPA.
My heart raced thinking, “An IPA this clear, this aromatically vivid?”
It was truly a defining moment in my beer journey.
That experience profoundly shapes how I approach brewing West Coast IPAs today.

We also aimed for a modern bitterness—clean and well-balanced on the finish—
rather than the harsh bitterness found in older West Coast IPAs.

To enhance clarity, we take time for clarification in the tank.
Chill haze from proteins may appear when cold,
but clarity returns as the temperature rises, allowing the hop aromas to shine through more vividly.

We combined Amarillo, Citra, Mosaic, Motueka, and CTZ hops,
carefully designed to express balanced citrus, pine, dank, and tropical character.
While maintaining the robust bitterness characteristic of a West Coast IPA,
we focused on achieving a dryness and clear finish that prevents the 8% ABV from feeling heavy.
